Voltage Transformers are used for metering and protection in high-voltage circuits. First impressions
The packaging says it all. The iPod classic's durable box with its perfectly-fitting lid, and the neat, densely packed interior, signify this is a product you can rely on completely. Remove the iPod classic from the box and you can feel and see that you have a carefully built, well-proportioned digital media player.

This impression of symmetry extends to the Click Wheel controls, which are the largest of the iPod range. Novice iPod owners will find it easy to keep their thumbs in place, particularly as the Click Wheel has a slightly coarser finish than its predecessor.

Features
The feature of the iPod classic that stands out the most is the storage capacity: 120GB. This is a disappointing reduction of 40GB from the previous top of the range model, but it's still 40GB more than the former standard version. So clearly, Apple has hit upon a compromise.

This compromise shouldn't cause too much concern, however. At 120GB, the iPod classic can store 30,000 four minute songs or one hundred and fifty hours of video. This is not to suggest that the iPod classic is just a compact, high capacity storage unit. You can now use Genius, Browse Album, and Browse Artist on the latest model as well as a host of other features.

Genius is particularly welcome because the odds are that if you've opted for an iPod classic, you have - or intend to have - a substantial music collection. Genius enables you to take full advantage of the listening possibilities such a collection can offer you. When you're playing a song, for example, and you feel it suits your mood and want to hear more tracks like it, activate Genius on your iPod classic. Genius searches through your collection and creates a playlist of songs that go well with the one you're currently listening to. You can then play the Genius playlist straightaway, save it, or refresh it and see what else Genius comes up with.

Alternatively, you can ask Genius to create playlists on iTunes. If you're happy with the selections, simply sync the results to your iPod classic. The result is a music mix prepared by a digital DJ and based on your preferences.

Browse Album is a convenient feature if you listen to your songs in random order, but occasionally enjoy a track so much you want more of the same. Use Browse Album in these circumstances, and you rapidly switch from shuffle mode to hearing the rest of the songs from the appropriate album. Browse Artist offers a similar feature, except that you can listen instead to all the songs you have available from the particular artist.

Technology
The iPod classic uses a 1.8 inch hard drive for storage as opposed to the flash memories of the shuffle, nano, and touch. The use of a hard drive gives the classic its superior storage ability; but the presence of a spinning hard drive disc may stop the iPod classic ever having a feature such as the nano's "shake to shuffle".

The two and a half inch colour LCD screen has LED backlighting, and 320 x 240 pixel resolution at 163 pixels per inch. The result is superb image clarity.

Built-in video support for the iPod classic is comprehensive. Among other things, this means you can obtain an appropriate AV cable, and watch videos, films, and TV shows on your TV.

Audio support is equally thorough and includes AAC and MP3 (16 to 320Kbps); MP3 VBR; Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4); WAV; AIFF; and Apple Lossless.

Connection to your computer is, of course, USB. Nonetheless, you can also charge the iPod classic using FireWire. This is handy if you still have devices that charge iPods using a FireWire connection.

Performance
The audio quality delivered by the iPod classic across the full sound spectrum is consistently good. This applies whether you're listening to a gentle classical piece for piano, or a full throttle rock track. Similarly, there's no sound distortion with the sudden dramatic bursts of music that may accompany any blockbuster film you're watching.

The classic's screen gives you precisely focused text, including the lyrics of songs, in a no-nonsense font. Colour reproduction of videos is excellent, and may pleasantly surprise anyone more used to the dimensions and specs of today's televisions.

Supporting the 120GB roominess of the iPod classic is a lithium ion battery. This has 36 continuous playback hours for music, and six hours for video. Once you use all this up, you need only spend two hours to reach an 80% charge, and a further two to restore the battery's full power. A charging ratio of 4:36 (1:9) is very good indeed, and along with the iPod touch is the best of the iPod range.

Conclusion
The "classic" tag befits this robust, dependable and powerful iPod. Because of the technology of the nano and the touch, the classic may no longer be the leader of the pack; but thanks to its huge storage capacity, the iPod classic is likely to stay popular for many years.

#1 - Computer

You can't get very far in the world of digital recording without a top quality computer. Whether it's a desktop or a laptop, a PC or a MAC is up to you and your tastes (and what you are used to) but what really matters is that you have a large amount of memory in your computer (RAM & hard disk space.) You should really get as much as you can afford because it's so essential to dealing with audio projects in an effective way.

You can usually get a much better deal price wise by going with a desktop but if you really like (or need) the ability to move your home studio around then a laptop would definitely be the better choice.

Macs are very popular in the world of audio partially because Pro Tools works so well with it and partially because they seem to experience less "issues" than PCs do. But that being said, I'm a PC guy. I'm just too used to PCs to move to Mac and you can definitely get the job done with a PC too.

#2 - Audio Interface

An audio interface is the device which will be the link between your computer and your inputs (whether they be from microphones, direct in, or a midi device.) Pro Tools systems (Digidesign) are the most popular in the world of digital music recording and I do recommend them (partly because it includes home studio essential #3 too) but there are a lot of other high quality brands out there too such as M-Audio.

The question you need to ask yourself is how many inputs do you need? If you are just going to record one or two instruments or vocals at a time then you can get away with getting a smaller (and much cheaper) interface that only has a couple of inputs. But if you plan on recording more instruments at once (or drums) then you'll need a bigger interface.

#3 - Recording & Mixing Software

Pro Tools is the most popular recording software, a copy of it comes with the Pro Tools audio interface. It's considered the standard and you probably should go with it if you can. Cubase is another popular choice that you may want to go with if you got a different audio interface (something other than Pro Tools.) One thing you should make note of is that of right now Pro Tools doesn't work with Microsoft Vista although apparently that problem is being corrected for the newest Pro Tools version (8.0) and it does work with XP.

#4 - Condenser Microphone

If you plan on recording any vocals or acoustic instruments then a condenser microphone is an absolute essential. The more you pay, the better the mic you will get. You will likely be spending at least $100 per condenser mic. How many do you need? Again, it depends on what you plan on recording. You must have at least one to get going.

#5 - Dynamic Microphone

A dynamic mic is a must have for recording amped instruments (such as an electric guitar) and for drums (usually each drum is recorded with a separate dynamic mic.) Get an SM 57 or SM 58 from Shure. They are about $100 per microphone. If you plan on doing acoustic only music then you won't need a dynamic microphone.

Technology, especially in electronics and disc technology is developing at a dazzling speed. Now we have Blu-rays with blue laser technology instead of red laser used for our DVD. It seems that the term 'DVD' standing for Digital Versatile Disc will be replaced by the term 'BD' standing for Blu-ray Disc. It has already begun entering our lives as well as our terminology.

When we take a look at its advantages, the storage capacity of this next-generation format BD is five times more than DVD format. The capacity of a single layer is 25GB and dual-layer has 50GB capacity. Blu-ray provides read-only (BD-ROM), recordable (BD-R) and rewritable (BD-RE) formats. A dual-layer can contain 9 hours of HD video. It supports all the codecs that DVD format supports and in addition, it supports Dolby True HD, DTS-HD and DTS Digital Surround audio codecs and MPEG-4AVC and SMPTE VC-1 video codes. The video bit rate is maximum 40.0 Mbps while DVD has only 9.8 Mbps video bit rate.

This technology is developed by a group of several huge companies such as Warner Bros, Walt Disney, Sony, LG, Dell and Apple. Many studios have begun releasing movies on BD and there are many more upcoming movies . The Blu-ray players are compatible with DVD and CD. The best thing about Blu-ray is that it supports HD (high-definition) video with high picture quality whereas DVD supports only SD (standard definition) as storage capacity of DVD is not sufficient for HD. Besides, it has a menu system that enables you to see anything in the menu while the movie is playing in the background. Also you can jump to any section on the BD easily. Another advantage of Blu-ray is its hard-coating. Unlike DVD, BD is scratch resistant.

Actually, HD-DVD is similar to BD, using blue laser technology. However, audio and video quality of BD is much more better. Also HD-DVD is not supported by most of the giants in the market. You will not be able to find the movies you would like to watch in the formats other than BD in near future. Hardware support of BD is also much more broader than HD-DVD.

Blu-ray will succeed the DVD format in a short time and DVD will lose its popularity as BD is supported by the leading movie studios and PC manufacturers. BD is the format of today but we do not know for how long and when it will be replaced with what. This market is full of competition and leading companies come out with something new everyday.

It is unavoidable to own Blu-ray players for watching new releases as it will not possible to find their DVD formats in near future. However, the Blu-ray movie prices are very affordable. You can find BD formats of your favorite movies starting from $6 - $7 up to $50 - $60 for the box sets and it is worth for its quality and new features.

I bought this so that i can use Wii with my LCD computer monitor (VGA input). It works great. I connect my computer also to the monitor through this (no difference in supported resolution or image quality), and use the remote to switch between computer and Wii. I gave this product 4/5 because the manual isn't very clear, and also because the + tab for the battery in the remote is bent slightly down so the remote won't work if you just drop the battery in place. You have to pry up the tab slightly, then slip the battery in place. (You can use the menu, channel, and volume controls on the side of the box as an alternative to the remote.) Setup is fairly easy, but the manual mentions selecting "search" from the menu, but there is no search option, instead, under the "Channel" option on the menu is "Auto Scan". The 4th page of the manual states how to navigate the menu options (channel buttons), and select your menu option, which is by pressing the "menu" button. The volume buttons are used to change the value. There is a delay of a few seconds after you press the menu button to select a menu option for the sub-menu to appear on screen, during which time, unlike most other menus, the original menu disappears completely and the screen has no menu on it until the sub-menu appears. This might make you think you that nothing is happening. Once the auto scan is complete, you will find that the channel numbers do not correspond to the ones from your cable provider, especially if some of the channels are scrambled. The box applies its own numbers to them based on whether it was able to get a clear signal or not. Picture quality varies, depending I suppose on the quality of the signal. Some channels are very clear, but others are a bit grainy. Sound quality is very good though.

Thinking about a new GPS? The task of choosing the one that's right for you can be very intimidating. With so many great brands, models and features to choose from, how do you know which one to buy?

When picking a GPS, the most important question to ask is "What do I want to do with it?" Any automotive GPS unit will tell you where you are and where to go, without getting you lost. As RV'ers, we all have a set of basic needs our GPS must fulfill. Beyond that, it's completely up to you whether you want, and are willing to pay the extra money for certain features.

Pre-Loaded Maps

The first factor to consider is what maps you need pre-loaded in your GPS. That, of course depends on where you plan to travel. Many systems come with road maps for the entire United States and Canada loaded into their main memory. Some come with all of North America and some come with Europe as well. This gives you the luxury to go anywhere without worrying about whether or not you loaded the proper maps; it also makes the device ready-to-roll, right out of the box. Pre-loaded maps occupy part of the main memory of the GPS; any excess main memory can be used for additional maps, MP3 music, or custom POI's. This brings us to memory capacity.

Memory Capacity

How much memory your GPS can hold is very important as well. If you purchase a unit that has very little extra main memory, and can't be expanded; you may find yourself unable to add features or points-of-interest (POI) when you want. Many GPS models only contain enough main memory to hold their pre-loaded maps, with very little left over. This is only a problem if they do not have a memory expansion slot. A memory expansion slot allows you to add memory to the GPS should you ever need it. Most take a Secure Digital (SD) card for memory expansion. SD cards are inexpensive and a great way to add memory to your unit when you need it. More expensive units typically have a considerable amount of their main memory free for your use, and also have a memory expansion slot. Less expensive units typically use most or all of their main memory for built-in features, but most of them still have a memory expansion slot.

Text To Speach

Another important feature to look for is "text-to-speech." Most voice-prompting GPS units will give an audio notification such as "Turn left in 300 feet" or "Take next exit." A unit with a text-to-speech function will speak not only the direction but the name of the street as well: "Turn left onto Mulberry Lane in 300 feet" or "Take Exit 23A." This is a huge help for many people, especially RV'ers, as they won't even have to glance at the screen to know where to go.

Live Traffic Service

A great new feature to consider is live traffic service. Available in larger cities, a subscription to a traffic service gives you real-time, up-to-the-minute updates on traffic and road conditions. Freeway's blocked from Exit 23 to Exit 29? Your GPS will notify you and offer an alternative route. After a free trial period, traffic service typically costs about $7/month. Some Garmin units also offer XM Radio services, so that you can get not only live traffic but XM Satellite Radio as well.

Even beyond a typical traffic service is the new Enhanced MSN Direct service. Many of the upper-end Garmin units, like the Nuvi 780 come with this capability. With MSN Direct, you can check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and then wirelessly send locations to your GPS. Like a traffic service, MSN Direct carries a monthly charge after the free trial period.

Bluetooth Enabled

One of the newest additions to GPS systems is the integration of a Bluetooth chip. If both your cell phone and GPS unit are Bluetooth-enabled, you'll be able to pair them up for hands-free calling, dial-a-POI features, and more, making your automotive electronics suite completely integrated. The television market has many competitors these days and there are two main platforms that are being used. Plasma and LCD offer some of the most amazing picture qualities ever seen on a television before. Each has its benefits and detractors. They are competing technologies and there are supporters on both sides. They are so close in performance; it's really difficult to pick a clear winner. Let's look at some of the things that separate plasma and LCD.

One of the neat things about plasma is that the picture is created by rare gases behind glass. These gases are manipulated to create bright colours on each individual pixel in the TV. What this does is that it creates some of the brightest and clearest images you've ever seen. LCD makes its colours a little bit differently. They actually just take white light and subtract whatever colours they need to, in order to make the colour on the screen. It's a little bit different process, but you're really splitting hairs when it comes to what it looks like on the screen. Both televisions present unbelievable colour quality compared to old TV's.

One distinct advantage that plasma has over LCD is in the area of viewing angles. Plasma actually boasts a 160 degree viewing angle which is pretty close to horizontal. This means that if you have a big room with furniture on all sides of the TV, plasma will give your guests on the side a clear picture. With most LCD models, their viewing angle is only about 90 degrees by comparison. If your couch is in front of the television, this most likely won't ever be an issue.

Another common complaint about plasma televisions is the "burn-in" that you can experience by an image that's on the screen for awhile. Back with the original plasmas, this was a bigger issue than it is today. Plasmas have become so advanced that you probably wouldn't burn something into the screen permanently unless you left it on for 10 hours or more. Claims of extreme "burn-in" cases have been greatly exaggerated in some cases. If you're a hardcore gamer and you sometimes leave your game on pause all night, you might need to be concerned. However, you can still do this and just shut the TV off if you have to. In most cases, it's really a non-issue at this point.

Although Plasma TVs generally are available in a much larger size than LCD, with the recent development in LCD technology, LCD Televisions can easily match the size, picture quality and offer much better value for your money. Reading an eBook on a PDA is nothing more like reading a Word Document, formatted into a book-like content structure. It actually just allowed one to look at text documents in the guise of "eBooks". This limited the commercial use of the content to basically manuals and corporate documents.

Oprah was quoted as saying that Amazon Kindle was "life-changing for me" and "the wave of the future." Why?

Amazon took a major leap forward by creating a product that physically looks like a book. This is what makes the Amazon Kindle so special. But, even more importantly, the text looks much like a text printed on a physical book. Reading eBooks on the Kindle is very "easy on the eyes" visually, since it uses the technology called E-Ink. The Amazon Kindle also has a high contrast screen, which does a great job of simulating a printed page. It is designed to be read under lighted conditions and can even be read under bright sunlight, just like a printed book.

The astounding size of the library is one of the biggest selling points of the Amazon Kindle. At last count, Amazon has over 190,000 books, which includes New York Times Best Sellers. The top U.S. and international newspapers are available for download, as well, including: NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Frankfurter, Irish Times, etc. And finally, over 1,000 major blog sites are accessible, including Slashdot, TechCruch, ESPN and more.

Another major leap for Amazon is how eBooks are distributed. Originally, Amazon had planned to distribute eBooks over Wi-Fi, but that would require customers to find a WiFi hot spot. Eventually, Amazon chose Sprint's high speed EVDO network. Using the technology called WhisperNet, customers can download eBooks anywhere that there's a cell phone connection. If the high speed EVDO network is not available, the Amazon Kindle switches back to the slower 1x speed.

Those mentioned here were just some of many reasons why Oprah Winfrey officially endorsed the Amazon Kindle in October of this year. She even declared it as her favorite new gadget.

You did your research, shopped around and finally picked up the HDTV of your dreams. Now what? Other than watching Blu-ray and upscaled DVDs, what else can you do? We're going to run down some HDTV programming options that you might be interested in.

Let's start off with antenna broadcasting. It's free, if you get a decent signal, the picture is very clean and every HDTV since March 2007 has a built-in HD tuner. I would first try to use the antenna you already have in your house. If that fails to deliver a decent signal, I would then start looking for an HD optimized antenna. Consult online or with your local HDTV expert for advice.

Unless you live in an rural area, getting over the air HD shouldn't be a problem. All of the major networks broadcast in HD. With a few minor exceptions, most of the programming line-up for these networks are in HD.

Most HD broadcasts are in 1080i format. The rest are in 720p. Video experts will say that 720p is the better format. Unlike 1080i, each frame of video is displayed in one pass so the end result is a smoother picture. 1080i will have a higher resolution but that's about it.

For cable HD access, you'll need a tuner box or a CableCard. Either can be acquired for a small fee. Sometimes it might even be free. it all depends on your cable provider and the region you live in.

For paying your monthly cable bill, you can get a good selection of basic and pay channels in HD. As with almost anything subscription based, it's all obviously dependent on how much you're willing to spend.

Thanks to MPEG-4 technology, satellite providers can offer more HD channels than cable. This also means that you'll probably have to get a new satellite decoder box if you want to enjoy these HD channels. Fortunately, the providers are willing to give discounts to help ease this transition.

If you happen to live in an area that Verizon services, you might want to find out if you're eligible for Fios. This a high speed optical technology that can be used for internet access and tv. Think of it as something similar to cable, except it's delivered over an optical line.

Satellite is the current winner right now. They offer the most HD content and their DVRs tend to be an upgrade from what's offered with the cable companies. I believe that's how things will be for the near future. Other technologies might gain favor further out in the future like IPTV. But as of right now, it's too early to tell.

I travel widely. Friends tell me it's not so much travel as the art of smearing my presence all over the planet. It makes for a rather thin layer. I am not fond of thin layers really... especially not on toast. And this is a story about a toaster...

I like thick layers of whatever it is I have to hand. Like a base layer of goat's milk butter, followed by half an inch of creamy ripe avocado, some humus, sprouts, tomato, cucumber, roast pumpkin seeds and pepper. That may sound excessive but it is not, and it is a meal in itself with all the nutrients you may require. On occasions the base layer of toast is simply an edible plate on which all that scrummy goodness is balanced.

I love toast. It can be as comforting as a nice cup of relaxing herbal tea. But I no longer have a toaster. I used to have a fabulous gas stove with a lovely built-in grill that made superb toast and magical cheesy toasties. But that stove broke and my landlord replaced it with a really awful thing that has an internal grill but it's a real pain to get to work and you have to have the door open for it to function which is a major design flaw and annoyance. So I miss my toast and in this entire month I have not yet managed the minor achievement of purchasing a new toaster.

The other night I was out with friends and left to return home, after a drink or three had been imbibed. I was on my bicycle. I planned to go a certain way home -- which would have meant going the wrong way up a one-way street on my bicycle with no front light. I was meeting a friend at my place and she was in a car leaving from the same bar, so I was in a hurry, and being the proud cyclist, was determined to prove my simple transport quicker than the planet's most popular A-to-B polluter. But something prompted me to take a new and slightly different route, realizing it might actually be quicker. This short cut, as it happened, was also the right and most sensible way for me to go, resulting in me going the right way up a one-way street. But before I got to the street I traversed a pedestrianized section. And there on the side, shivering up against a brick wall was a sodden toaster. A 2-slot 4-slice configuration in white with some light turquoise details, brand unclear. Something plastic stuck in its maw.

Naturally I was quite intrigued at this fortuitous find -- it being precisely what I needed. It had about it every look of being a lost pet, bewildered and bedraggled. The remoteness of position, time of night and weather conditions made it highly unlikely that its owner intended to collect it. But why would someone abandon a working toaster? Then again why would someone bring a broken toaster to THIS place and abandon it there? Did this toaster run away from an abusive home or excitedly wander out for an adventure after some errant child left the kitchen door open and now it can't find its way back to the pantry? Or had it been drinking? So I wondered -- was the universe gifting me a toaster? Sure I hoped that would be the case.

At any rate, I was in a hurry, so I scooped it up and cycled with it under my arm back to mine. I put it on my kitchen table and marvelled at the improbability of this circumstance. The universe will provide that which you seek and ask for. And even that which it knows you need, before you've even asked for it.

But I have yet to test it. You see I was inspired by it to write this tale. And being of inquiring mind I thought I would be authentically journalistic about the experience and document the events as or nearly as they happened. So it still remains to be seen if the toaster works or not. I have some wonderful fresh sour dough bread purchased just today which would make super wonderful toast. Mmm... just the thing to survive a night of beastly northern winter.

The toaster is next to me right now and my typing is causing the table to jiggle just slightly which in turn is making the toaster's innards rattle slightly, like it's purring or communicating with me.

And so to work to test it out.

I removed a milky bar wrapper from its innards (maybe that was what was confusing it and drove it madly out of its safe environment) and gave it a clean like one would a stray and its cord got all-a-waggling like a dog's so I am thinking of it as a hound. And it's male. And while I find the improbability of the situation very amusing, in the event of it functioning, I have a very light feeling of guilt regarding ownership.

So I plan to paste a poster "FOUND - Male Toaster, white 2-slot, 4-slice Sunday 30 November. Call 555-784-2345 to reclaim." I'll include a photo and, well, if no-one comes forward to claim it then I will mark this event as example A and really trust the universe to provide.

Darn it -- there are vital pieces missing so it only toasts on one side. This is effectively a non-functioning toaster -- one cannot be bothered with a toaster that only toasts one side really... and that's a shame. It would have been so much easier than that awful grill. So what is very clear is that I should make the time to ensure I get a toaster as soon as possible. No more messing around.

Post script... resolved to buy a toaster today. I still managed to think of several other things more important to do and finally only left the office at 4.15pm to just damn well buy the thing. Except that the model I wanted was out of stock. So I bought another at nearly twice the price... That'll teach me.

My next mission... to get a new Snap Circuits SC-300 for my son for Christmas. It's an award-winning electronic toy designed to teach budding engineers the basics of electronics. It includes real circuit components just like the circuit boards inside radios, televisions, computers, and other electronic devices. The SC-300 set makes it easy for anyone from 8 to 108 to create simple electronic circuits and devices, and it's certainly a lot easier than fixing the toaster I stumbled across.

Customer Review: Excellent Picture Quality--Excellent Features
I purchased the Sony 40" XBR5 in April of 2008. I use an upscaling DVD player and also have my PC connected to the XBR. I hope to soon attach a new 80 gig PS3 to the system. All I can say is the whole package is superb! I have sampled most of the features including the motion enhancers--everything works as advertised. And, of course, the picture quality is second to none. Finally, I cannot detect any fan noise from the XBR. I recommend this unit to anyone desiring the highest quality LCD display.

The market is flooded with digital cameras and it can get confusing for a buyer to choose one best suited for his purpose. This increasing popularity of digital cameras is not a fluke but because they provide enough advantages over the traditional cameras, the manufacturers have all but abandoned the old cameras in favor of the digital ones.

Photos can be stored digitally and only the necessary photo can be printed versus printing every shot of the film. New rolls of film need not be bought as the storage cards can be used over and over again. Image enhancement is easy with digital cameras and photos can also be shared instantly. Taking all this into account it is no wonder that digital cameras are so much in demand.

Manufactures have come out with basically three broad categories in digital cameras like ultra-compact models, point-and-shoot-models and advanced models. The ultra-compact cameras are very thin (measuring less than 1inch in thickness) and look very stylish. They are available in many different colors though they do not offer any high-end features.

Point-and-shoot models vary in size and features though usually they come without any manual control features. With this type, it is simply taking the camera out of the box, inserting the battery and memory card and start shooting immediately. These are normally used by novices who have never taken a picture before.

The advanced models of course offer more options and features. They come with manual-control features and may include interchangeable lenses. External flash units are added extras and considerably add to the price. The advanced models are more suitable for intermediate to experienced photographers.

Some of the best new features to look for in a digital camera are image stabilization which takes care that the pictures are not hazy especially if taken in low light or because of a camera shake. Most take care that the shake is kept to the minimum and that the picture quality does not suffer.

Wide-angle facilities are another feature to watch out for in the digital camera. Even though most of them are limited to about 25mm - 30mm, it does come in useful. Then there are optical zoom lenses which are offered by the latest digital cameras and which come in sizes of 10 x, 12 x and even 15x. A lot of the newer models offer the very advanced technology of face recognition which means that the camera can find the person in frame and then the auto focus is applied to ensure that the face is within the frame.

Before shopping it is best to determine what is important for you. Someone may be comfortable with a thin camera while others may prefer one with zoom lenses. Any purchase boils down to one`s personal preferences but in the case of cameras studying the features and matching your requirements to it will help make the purchase considerably smoother.

I've had my Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray Player for 2 weeks now. I've never owned a Blu-Ray player before. It looks nice in my cabinet, it's quieter than my roommates' Blu-Ray player, and of course it's got amazing picture and sound. The USB port and the Ethernet port work, but I haven't had to download any firmware or code updates yet.

The only real operational noise you hear is some track-seeking, which you can hear from the couch if it's quiet. Not a big deal to me. I have noticed the occasional flicker in the middle of the screen in some parts of mostly-black screens (like credits). It always happens in the same frames, though, so it might be a problem with the discs rather than the player.

One big advantage the Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray Player has over my roommates' is that the discs load much faster. It also helps that there's a progress bar during the load times, which makes it seem even less annoying. At least you know something is happening.

Of course, the Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray Player isn't perfect. It's not top-of-the-line, so what do you expect? For one thing, the only outputs on the back are the RCA outputs - there's no coaxial, no headphone, none of the older types of cabling - so you've gotta get a newer TV (not like you wouldn't be totally wasting the HD aspect of Blu-Ray by playing it on an older TV anyway). More importantly, there are no Dolby 5.1 audio outputs.

One of the upshots of this is that you can't bypass your receivers pre-amp to play the newer audio formats and let the blu-ray player decode them. The old receiver I used only decoded Dolby 5.1 (no DTS). This player lets you send a pulse-modulated stream to your receiver from a Dolby 5.1 signal, but my receiver only saw it as 2-channel (it doesn't 'speak' pulse-code modulation). At least the player can downgrade the sample rates so that older receivers will still get sound, even if it's not as pristine as it could be with a modern receiver.

I ended up going out and paying for a new receiver in order to take advantage of the sound quality that the Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray Player offers. Maybe I'm a bit obsessive, but it just didn't feel right to have an awesome new picture and not have the perfect sound to go with it.

So my conclusion is that for those people with newer receivers and newer televisions - this blu-ray player is top-notch. If you have an older receiver, ironically, the best savings would be to pay a little more for a player with Dolby 5.1 analog outputs and continue to use your existing receiver.

Every home studio that has any interest in recording vocals and/or acoustic instruments needs at least one really quality condenser microphone. I can attest from personal experience that the Shure KSM44 is the perfect condenser microphone for a home recording studio because of a couple of reasons which I will list below.

(1) It's Tough.

Sometimes things happen. My KSM44 has been dropped on the ground numerous times. It has really taken a beating. I've never gone out of my way to care for it the way it probably should be cared for because I'm too lazy to put it away in it's case.

I bought this mic used from Guitar Center about six years ago and guess what: It still works just as well as the day I bought it. Indeed; this is a well built tough as nails microphone. It's not something you'll need to replace in a year or two, it's something that can be a part of your home studio for the foreseeable future.

(2) It's Crystal Clear

You will get beautiful clear sound whether you are recording vocals or acoustic instruments, although I do particularly like the sound it gives to vocals. You'll be impressed by how much better vocals sound on this microphone compared to a lesser condenser mic. And of course it blows a dynamic mic or any other cheapie mic out of the water.

It's Not All Roses

Unfortunately it's not all good news. What's the bad news? This microphone costs about $800 new. That may be well out of your price range, but if you can afford it then I must highly recommend it.

If you have ever tried to watch an LCD television, or if you have tried to look at an LCD computer monitor, you may notice that the picture does not have the same quality from every viewing angle. An LCD television is not quite the same as a picture tube television and there are some rules you need to follow in order to get the maximum viewing enjoyment from your LCD television.

One of the terms you should become familiar with when it comes to determining the distance you should sit from your LCD television is aspect ratio. Aspect ratio is basically the size of the image on the screen and how the television creates the image. The standard picture tube televisions use an aspect ration of 4:3 and for years this was more than sufficient for everyone. The higher your aspect ratio the better quality your picture. HD televisions like LCD televisions use a higher aspect ratio to get a better picture. Typically the aspect ratio for an LCD television is 16:9. This means that the picture is clearer even when you are sitting closer to the screen. This becomes important to understand later in this discussion.

First and foremost on getting the best viewing experience out of your LCD television is where your eyes should be in relation to the screen. With a picture tube you can look at the screen from almost any angle and still see the picture. But with an LCD television you need to have your eyes even with the middle of the screen in order to view the picture on the screen properly. Go ahead and try looking at your LCD television from different angles and you will see the difference. The ideal location for your eyes is right in the middle of the screen.

What about the distance you should be seated from the screen in order to see the picture clearly? This is where the understanding of aspect ration becomes important. Because LCD televisions have a higher aspect ratio their picture is much clearer even when you are sitting close to the screen. Many people use the rule of two arm's lengths to determine how far they should sit from their LCD television. What that means is you place yourself two arm's lengths from the center of the screen. Of course if you have a larger screen then you may want to move yourself back a bit further just to make sure you are able to see the entire screen. But the wonderful thing about LCD televisions is that you can sit as close as you want and you will still be able to see the picture clearly. That is the advantage of LCD televisions using high definition.

There are two main choices when you decide to buy home intercom systems. Those choices are between a wired intercom or a wireless home intercom system.

Really the only way you would decide to buy a wired system is if you already have an old one installed in your house, or you are building a new house. Otherwise the installation cost of running the wires would be too high.

If you are building a new house, you can simply have the electricians run the wires for the system when they are doing the rest of the electrical and phone wiring. They can also do the final installation of the units after the drywall is installed.

If this is the route you want to go, you just need to give the electricians the installation manual for the system so they can see what kind of wire they need to run, and so they know what to quote you for final installation cost. There is nothing too complicated about installing modern home intercom systems so any electrician or even a telephone system installer should be able to do it.

To choose a wired system you really just need to find one that has the features you are looking for. Most of them come with a built-in AM/FM radio, but you may want one with a CD player too. If you want to go really basic, and spend less, you can get a basic system with no music.

If you have a house that isn't wired for intercom, then the best choice is to go with a wireless system. These may be attractive to you even if you have an existing wired system. One of the advantages of a wireless system over a wired system is that the units are more portable. If you are sitting in your favorite chair and someone pages you, with a wired intercom you have to get out of your chair and go to where it is installed to talk back to someone. With a wireless system, you can put a portable unit by your chair and just reach over and press a button.

If you like the looks of a home intercom system that is installed in a wall, you can get wireless units that have a combination of flush-mounted wall units, along with portable units. So you have wall-mount units in some rooms, and a few portable ones in strategic locations that will talk to the wall units.

The advantages of a wired intercom system over a wireless one, is that you never have to worry about interference from some other wireless device. Some wireless systems minimize this possibility though. If you are building a new house, it would still probably be wise to consider a wired system. There is never a cheaper time to install wires in a wall than before the drywall goes up.

So the right home intercom system choice for you just depends on your personal choice and the house you are installing it in. Either way you go, you'll appreciate not having to shout at your family members every time you need to talk to them. That's truly the biggest benefit of home intercom systems.

Shopping today is very different from the way it was. In the olden days you walked into a store and either bought what was on the shelf or whatever some sales person recommended. If you think of buying something as expensive and complex as, for example, a home theater system, you'll want more information than a bored sales associate at an electronics store is likely to give you.

People often talk about Web 2.0. It is a term that loosely describes the use of the Web for information sharing, social networks and web-based communities. Web 2.0 means websites where people contribute, generate content, help each other, and share experiences and opinions. That works, but it can be a bit cumbersome and it's really better to do your research at home. But that is where you run into another problem: the Web has become so huge and commercialized that it's often difficult to find genuine information as opposed to sites with tons of ads and almost nothing of substance. If you think of setting up a home cinema and want to learn about the latest projectors, video switches and 1080p HDTVs, it's frustrating to have to sift through dozens of sites without getting good information.

The secret is to know where to look. There are sites that combine product reviews, product news, and just general product information in numerous categories. They may include YouTube videos explaining and demonstrating products, link collections to products and reviews of interest, RSS feeds, and more. The key is that it's all in one place so you can learn about products, see them, see what others have to say about them, and then also get an idea about costs. For complex, expensive items like home theater systems, educating yourself as much as you can is essential and can save you a lot of money.

The web is a wonderful thing. I knew next to nothing about home theater systems before I bought one myself. Research and a few dedicated websites on the technology helped tremendously.

Many consumers have an eye for picture quality of high definition TV. The digital programming, demanded by government regulations to begin in 2009 is already been broadcast on many networks. Let me tell you from experience how important it is to know how to shoot good digital video with your camcorder before going on that vacation or filming that big event. When I was getting married my sister offered to film the happy day for me with her new camcorder, I agreed as it would save money on the wedding as a videographer could get quite expensive.

Let me tell you how wrong I was, the digital video was dark, shaky and blurred anytime she went into zoom or moved around the room. The sound was off and muffled and it was more of a headache to watch rather than a joy. In a nutshell, I wish I spent money on a good digital video shooting.

I dont want people to make the same mistake that I did so to spread the word on my learning experience I would like to pass on some great tips on how to shoot good digital video with your Minidv camcorder.

Tip #1 - Do not record while walking or moving about as the digital camcorder cannot stay focused on a moving object. Choose a place to stand and begin by recording a starting point for a few seconds before moving onto the next object. Slowly and carefully pan the camcorder to the next point of focus and hold there for a few more seconds before you stop shooting.

Tip #2 - Avoid excessive zooming of objects, not only does it kill the camcorder battery faster, it can give the viewers a crazy headache. If there were a moment youd like to catch up close, stand still and take your time while zooming and shooting video, also try to avoid any quick motions, as the image will blur.

Tip #3 - Make sure that the lighting around you is bright enough and do not point the camcorder lens directly facing sunlight, not only can this damage the video camera lens, it will also blacken the images making for an unpleasant movie. If you plan to be indoors, I suggest you invest in a camcorder light attachment that can easily be placed onto the video camera and turned on if needed.

Tip #4 - Last but not least, my favorite camcorder accessory by far has to be a Tripod. You can buy a cheap little mini table tripod for simple videos or you can invest in a larger stand up tripod for longer shooting of video. By using a tripod when recording, you can be assured that your images will not be shaky nor will the movie look amateur.

With the growing interest in HDTV and digital TV, there are lots of merchants trying to tell people that they need to buy a new antenna when they buy a new TV. This is not necessarily true, because there is no such thing as an HDTV antenna or even a digital antenna. An antenna is essentially just a piece of wire, and it can't tell the difference between a digital and analog broadcast. What really matters is whether you have a digital or analog tuner between the antenna and the TV, or integrated into the TV itself.

But, you do need to have a certain kind of antenna to watch a digital broadcast, as things stand today. You are probably familiar with the difference between VHF (channels 2-13) and UHF (channels 14-83). Right now, the vast majority of TV stations broadcasting in digital are using the UHF range, so the solution to the digital/analog question is very simple: just get a UHF antenna, or a combination VHF/UHF antenna. Fortunately, almost every antenna available does receive UHF signals, so this is really a non-issue.

It's pretty likely that TV stations will eventually start to use the VHF range for digital broadcasts, since there is no technical reason not to, but no one knows for sure yet. So, your best bet is to get a UHF antenna for all digital TV and HDTV broadcasts. If you want to watch local analog broadcasts between now and February 2009 (the date of the analog to digital switch), get one that also does VHF.

Even though antennas aren't fundamentally designed to receive digital or analog broadcasts, the whole world of TV broadcasting is going digital, so manufacturers are starting to design antennas to fit better into the digital world. Using an antenna from the digital age with your digital TV makes the whole experience a little more user-friendly. We are satisfied with this 26" LCD tv. It was purchased because of favorable direct comparison with other well known manufacturers as well as recommendations from friends that have experience with the brand. We have a problem free 37" 1080p Magnavox LCD for movie viewing, and use the VIZIO for sports and casual viewing in the kitchen. The set is recessed in the island, so the screen is lower than eye level. The picture is great, as detailed as our larger Magnavox, which offers greater resolution. The volume can be raised quite loud to overcome ambient noise and can be tailored to render good sound quality even being enclosed in a cabinet. The speakers are down firing, but somehow sound clear nonetheless. The images can be seen easily off axis, but at extreme angles it does lose contrast. It was easy to set up, scanning and adding 60 more digital cable channels than the outgoing analog set did. We do not have a cable box on this set yet so it will not pick up pay channels, but all are very clear in non-HD digital. DVD's look great, and of course network HD is stunning. Old analog content can blur and artifact, so if you favor this type of programming this might not be the set for you. The remote fits the hand nicely, has direct access to captioning, screen format, input, and has a led to confirm button presses, but lacks back-lit keys. There are 3 HDMI inputs, 2 are v1.3, a game port on the side, as well as coaxial, pc and analog. The stand could be stronger, and does not swivel, but it does the job.

I recently purchased this television for my bedroom. It's the perfect size to give a "widescreen feeling" and HD experience in a bedroom without being overbearing. This is my second Vizio, and I made the purchase after owning a 42" 1080p for a year. In fact, I returned a 26" LCD by another maker that I had purchased on Black Friday. Although that TV had some nice qualities, I was not completely satisfied and I found myself worrying about the life of the TV and the manufacturer's rather poor reputation for handling repair/replacement issues. When the price of this 26" Vizio dropped to only $50 more than I had paid for the Black Friday deal, I jumped at the chance to go with a television with the quality, performance, and reputation of Vizio. I did extensive research and shopping (looked at a lot of TVs both at stores and in friends' homes) before I bought my first Vizio and again when looking for a 26" TV, and I am one of those who will tell you not to be fooled by people who claim that their [certain other brands] TVs are far superior to Vizio. It's simply not true but some need to justify paying too much money. Of course some TVs may be superior in some ways, but Vizios compete solidly in the side-by-side viewing comparison and features offered. For those who haven't shopped LCDs much, please note that all major manufacturers, including Vizio, tend to have more than one (often several) models of the same size with widely varying characteristics. So if an X brand TV is priced competitively with a Vizio, do not assume that because the other TV is X brand with sexy advertising that it is superior and a better buy. It's likely that the X brand-big-advertising-budget-manufacturer TV is their low-end model with inferior specifications/quality. Vizio offers excellent pricing throughout all tiers of its product line, so a high-end Vizio will be cheaper than a high-end X brand but only a low-end X brand will be priced similarly with a high- or mid-range Vizio. Thus the value of Vizio is pretty great. The picture of my 26" is excellent and I definitely get that "wow, I can't believe how beautiful this picture is feeling" when I watch. The range of viewing angles seems really good (especially compared to the TV I returned). There are many options for picture customization so please play around with the settings to get them to your liking (i.e., backlight setting too high out of the box, picture becomes richer when lowered). There are ample inputs. Like with my 42" I am surprised by how well the TV's audio creates virtual "surround sound" with the TV's own speakers. The setup and menus are really self-explanatory and anyone who's ever used a DVD player or any basic electronics can figure this TV out without even reading the manual. The TV has a sleek look and feels solidly constructed. Vizio has a strong reputation for customer service (although I have not personally had to contact anyone regarding my TVs). They also throw in extras that many companies do not which increase their market position in my opinion--like including an HDMI cable with larger TVs and providing in-home service for TVs 30" or larger--and other nice touches that separate them from no-name (and some big name) manufacturers and increase value to consumers.

So for the cost of about six months' worth of weekly nights at the movies, you could be well on your way to paying for your own Home Theater. If you have a garage, basement, or spare room which isn't going to be needed for any other use, why not turn it into a Home Theater using the same technique that you'd use to construct a soundproof home music studio?

You can construct a "room within a room" for you Home Theater by framing a set of new walls right in the room you intend to transform, assembling them flat on the floor and simply lifting them into position. By creating a room within a room, you'll automatically be adding some dead air space between the room's original walls and its new ones, and sealed dead air space is an excellent form of soundproofing. But if you intend to be watching movies with seriously loud sound tracks, you should bolster your soundproofing with some additional materials.

Our favorite batt insulations to use in the joist or stud cavities of a soundproof room are either Roxul Safe or Roxul AFB, but if you can't find either of them, a good substitute is high quality rock or mineral wool. When you've filled the joist or stud cavities, you can nail or staple a layer of Loaded Mass Vinyl(MLV) directly over the studs so that it can move in response to the sound vibrations. Use either the roofing nails which have large heads of plastic, or an industrial air stapler to attach the MLV to the joists or studs.

By resonating with the sound, the MLV will provide the maximum sound-deadening needed to completely soundproof your Home Theater.If you can overlap the seams sof the MLV when you nail or staple it, your soundproofing will be better, but if an overlap isn't possible, then you should butt the seams and caulk them along with the full perimeter of the vinyl, so that the MLV works as a Soundproofing Material membrane protecting the ceiling and walls of your Home Theater.

The caulked seams of the MLV should also be taped with sealer tape, and they you can install two layers of " drywall, not only to the walls, but to the ceiling of your Home Theater. If that stretches your budget, a 5/8" layer of fire code-compliant drywall will work.

If you decide to go with the two layers of drywall, you should use Green Glue damping compound on the second layer applying it to the back of the drywall and then using screws to attach it to the inner layer of drywall so that the glue is sandwiched between them. The Green Glue will add some moisture to both layers of the drywall and prevent the noise made inside your Home Theater from spreading outward along its walls. When the drywall has been installed, you can use acoustical treatments to turn your Home Theater into a working replica of an actual movie theater!

Haier HLT71 7-Inch Portable LCD TV Remote could use a "volume" control. Some stations are good, others not. Maybe in February when all go digital it will be better. Only used mornings while make-up is applied. Pretty good for the price.

We bought this TV (the Haier HLT71) for my Mother-in-law who likes to be able to have a small TV to take from her kitchen to her office room in her house. And, with the new manditory digital signal taking effect in Feb., we didn't want her to have to mess around with constantly having to connect & disconnect a digital converter box, as this TV has a built-in digital tuner! It was very easy to set up using the on-screen menu, and the picture is very clear. However, the colors are not as vivid as her old, portable, analog TV. I tried to turn up the color adjustment, but it does not make much of a difference. So, I had to turn the color adjustment up all the way to make any difference at all! This is why I gave this TV only 4 stars out 5. Don't get me wrong though, it still has a very good picture, and the convenience of having such a small, lightweight (like a feather!!), full-featured TV like this, definitely out-weighs the cons! The set includes a built-in antenna, which seems to do alright in the greater Philadelphia area where my Mom-in-law lives, but you can always add a nicer antenna, or hook it up to cable/satellite for better reception. It also comes with a convenient remote control that is easy to use, a home adaptor/charger, a car adaptor/charger, and a rechargeable battery that says it lasts for about 2 hours on a charge!! That's awesome!!! Very nice if you don't want to miss your show when "nature calls"! LOL!! Or if you want to take it outside to watch! It also has a built-in stand that pops out from the back of the unit so you can prop it up on a table to watch it. And, it has a very nice black, rubberized coating that protects it should it ever get bumped a little. I tell you what, after proofreading my own review here, I think I might just have to go and buy one of these little TV's for myself!! We paid about $123.00 for my mother-in-law's TV here on Amazon. Great deal!!! Buy one, and ENJOY!!
